Dhaakad Box Office Review: Expectations

The film has been in the making for a long time, but to be honest, there is nothing in it that excites us. It was back in 2019, that this action thriller was announced but was put on hold due to covid. The film suffered a huge loss as it was just lost in the chaos and no one even remembered that Kangana Ranaut was coming up with such a film.

While the posters didn’t create much buzz, the trailers did grab some attention, especially the second one. Though the trailers gave us an edgy feel with captivating action and performances, it seemed like a big gamble as action thrillers set in the dark zone in Bollywood have always been a risky genre.

Star Cast:

Kangana Ranaut, Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta, Shashwat Chatterjee

Director:

Rajneesh ‘Raazi’ Ghai

What’s Good:

There are some things that you immediately forget about what’s coming next.

What’s Bad:

The whole action takes place without any concrete purpose, hence getting monotonous

Loo Break:

Luckily, for everyone wanting a break, there’s a lullaby ‘Soja Re’ which is performed in multiple versions and is your cue to put that air-conditioning to some better use.

Watch or Not?:

This movie is a ‘financial leak’, it takes way more than it will work back

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime:

131 mins (feels like walking the longest road in the world, in a heatwave, without water)

Dhaakad Movie Review:

Saswata Chatterjee’s character says to Agni (Kangana Ranaut), “Tumhari dikat ye hai, ke tum koi koan akne akne aane laggi ho…” and ironically summarizes the whole problem with the script in one line. Agni comes with a dark past, she is seeking revenge and she is on the hunt for a child trafficking kingpin* Rudraveer (Arjun Rampal), who has been off the radar for a decade.

A monochromatic flashback later we learn the story of Rudraveer and his girlfriend Rohini (Divya Dutta) as they become ‘bad’ eaters for breakfast. Agni has the task of finding them in India and stopping them while fighting with their past. Will she be able to do this? Are you sure you want to ask this question even after knowing the cast?

Dhaakad Movie Review: Script Analysis

The story of Rajneesh Razi Ghai, Chintan Gandhi, and Rinish Ravindra is a classic example of how focusing on a select few sections of a film is never an option. The only fear I had when stepping into it was “all style no substance” and that’s exactly what happened. We get the point that action feels good, but that doesn’t mean you keep stowing the same thing out of our throats expecting us to say “Wow! What an action!”

Nayak is hunting with a vengeance involving his parents, a child trafficking group linked to it all, and a senior officer is helping Nayak to accomplish the said mission. Is there anything new that you haven’t heard or seen in movies before? But, “Wow, what an action!” Credits Where it’s due, Tetsuo Nagata’s cinematography really gifts us with some amazingly shot scenes, but alas, they don’t build up the intrigue.

Dhaakad Movie Review: Star Performance

Kangana Ranaut wins the battle physically but loses the battle mentally, as her character is only when she is not fighting on-screen (pun intended!) We have seen the best of her, we have seen the worst but this one, my friends, is now stepping into the ‘dangerous’ category.

Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta gave their all for nothing! Whatever they do, they can win many accolades if they were made for the right film. His psycho-pair had the colors of Harley Quinn and the Joker, but like everything else, it would all be in vain. Shashwat Chatterjee continues to do good things for the abandoned children (Jagga Jasoos and now, this), but this time it is in utter ruin.

Dhaakad Movie Review: Direction, Music

There is an old saying in Hollywood that if an actor is doing well, there is a chance that sooner or later someone will pay him enough money to make a great film. Rajneesh ‘Raazi’ Ghai has produced a film that is a celebration of Kangana as an actress but at the cost of a sad script.

It was the perfect place for composer Dhruv Ghanekar to showcase his love for Indo-Western fusion and he knows it best. It is sometimes eclipsed by some loud action sequences.

Dhaakad Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, if a genie comes in front of Kangana Ranaut, she must trade all 3 of her wishes to remove Dhaakad from everyone’s memory (all 3 as it is an impossible task, you must call Doctor Strange) have to!)
